Help us resource ECD Centres across South Africa
Our Goals
We’re on a mission to ensure every South African child has the necessary building blocks to thrive by the time they reach Grade R through our integrative learning programme.
To date, the Finding Thabo team has trained over six thousand ECD practitioners throughout South Africa, impacting the lives of 150 000 young children.
With the right funding partners, our low-resource, high-impact programme can help to change the world through play.
The Hard Truth
In South Africa, our children are struggling:
- Only 35% are meeting their developmental milestones by age 5.
- Research data shows that 81% of Grade 4s can’t read for meaning.
- More than half of Grade 2 children don’t know the full alphabet.
- 55% of Grade 5 learners can’t complete a simple Grade 3 level maths question like 24÷ 3.
The reasons for this widespread under-performance are many, and the issues are complex, but one of the main reasons is that children aren’t school-ready when they begin Grade R (the year they turn 6).
But we can help.
Under Resourced Communities
Through our model of training early childhood development (ECD) practitioners to help children find Thabo, we are directly addressing deficits in children in under-resourced communities.
Training Programme
The Finding Thabo team offers comprehensive training and equips each ECD practitioner with an A2 high-gloss calendar of Finding Thabo pictures, as well as a resource guide and A3 calendars for small group activities.
Practitioners also get access to the WhatsApp Channel and the Assessment App in the Play Store.
